How many characters may I use in my number plate?
You are able to use a maximum of 7 characters. These include numbers and/or letters. It does not include spaces as a character and no “special” characters (e.g.! @, #, $, %, &, *, +) may be used.
Can I design my own number plate(s)?
No, only SABS approved number plate(s) can be used on our South African roads.
Can I transfer my plate?
Yes, Personalised Number Plates are transferrable from person to person and from car to car. Each Province has a different fee for this.
How can I sell my plate?
We can help you! We will require a R1 000.00 administration and listing fee to add your personalised number plate to our Resale Page on our www.plates.co.za website
Are there annual or additional fees after I buy my personalised Plate?
There are NO annual fees but your usual annual Car License Renewal Fee is applicable. Depending on the Province you live in, additional fees include an Allocation Fee as well as the pro rate License Fee which is payable to the Municipality when you “link” the plate to a car.
When will I know the availability of my chosen plate?
Depending on the Province it could take from 48 hours to 5 working days after submission of your application and all the supporting documentation.
How long can I reserve a personalise plate?
You have a 21-day window period from the time the plate is approved to when you have to pay for your plate. If no payment is forthcoming, the plate will go back into the System, for another client.
How long before I am legally required to allocate a personalised plate to a vehicle?
In most Provinces you have 12 months to allocate to a vehicle.
Can I link a personalised plate to a vehicle if I have outstanding traffic fines?
If you have an administration block against your name because of specific fines then NO, we suggest that you check your outstanding fines in advance. Go onto our www.finesSA.co.za website and complete our Form on our Home Page to receive your updated Fines Status Report.
